We offer the major legal topics listed below and much more. Please enquire if your area of interest is not listed as our list is not exhaustive by any means. We can offer courses, for example, in Maritime Law and many other areas of Commercial Law including International Trade. For more information on courses please see below >>>
Our courses are practical in content in that we cover the language input required to create agreements and documents. Perhaps, the best example of this is a course where Mergers and Acquisitions is a major component. During this course we will, in addition to presenting the whole process from beginning to end, closely examine all documentation from the initial Letter of Intent (Heads of Agreement), Confidentiality Agreement, Exclusivity Agreement, Seller's Disclosure Letter, Purchaser's Questionnaire in the Due Diligence stage, Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) or Asset Purchase Agreement (APA) and all check lists. We will look at the 'Locked-box' mechanism in contrast to the normal Completion Accounts approach and explain all phrases such as 'long-stop date', 'back-stop date', 'good leaver', 'bad leaver', 'call options, 'put options' etc. that are seen in SPAs. It is a thorough examination of all aspects of company acquisition which must be delivered by a lawyer who knows the process and the language employed.
We offer various types of legal English courses ranging from one-to-one courses where you are the only participant to small groups of approximately three to four participants. We arrange group courses where the level and interests of the participants are the same.
Our one-to-one courses are particularly effective as the one-to-one setting allows us to focus exclusively on your specific needs and interests.
These courses are suitable for legal practitioners who need to improve their legal English, other professionals who require a knowledge of Legal English such as interpreters, translators etc. and students preparing for a career in Law, university degrees in Law or Criminology, degrees in other fields with law as a component and relevant examinations.
PRACTICAL Obviously, every course is different depending on participants' needs; however, we offer courses that are practical and useful for busy professionals.
Courses may focus on one or several of the above areas of law and also deal with aspects of legal procedure associated with the practice of law. Every course is unique, and a detailed Needs Analysis is carried out prior to course commencement to identify those areas of law and procedure that are relevant and require attention including English language aspects.
GENERAL Frequently, we are asked for courses that focus on aspects of legal writing, drafting of contractual documents, examining and preparing documents in processes such as Mergers and Acquisitions, meeting, greeting, advising and dealing with clients, aspects of court advocacy, communicating and explaining legal issues with English speaking colleagues, negotiating and making presentations to name only a few. Every course is unique and focused on your individual needs and objectives.
One particular aspect of our courses relates to the difficulties that exist in explaining the differences in laws and practice and procedure between Common Law jurisdictions and Codified Law systems of non-English speaking jurisdictions. This can be quite difficult for lawyers to do, and even more difficult for clients to fully understand. Our courses take this difficulty into account so that, for example, an Italian lawyer can focus on properly explaining the effect of Italian legal procedure to an English speaking colleague using language used and understood by English speaking lawyers.
Of course, we also cover normal language and terms which are more easily understood by clients who need clear and concise explanations.
Effective communication is a key element of our courses with correct and good use of English as a priority. The core language skills - speaking, listening, writing and reading - are practised as necessary together with appropriate vocabulary and phrase building, pronunciation and correct use of grammar as needed. Your needs and objectives are clearly identified before and at course commencement and language weaknesses addressed in a professional and helpful manner.
Outside lessons there will be an opportunity to visit the Law Courts during term and as appropriate. We want you to take every opportunity to practise the language you have covered on your course and expect that you will be pleasantly surprised with your progress at course conclusion.
